I doubt there are too many yaoi fans out there who haven't heard of this series by Sanami Matoh. "FAKE" consists of seven volumes which were released between 1994 and 2000. There is also an OAV available as well as a doujinshi entitled "Like Like Love". In the doujinshi, Sanami Matoh revisits the lives of some the main characters a couple of years (I think) after the end of the series.
"FAKE" would have to be one of my all-time favourite series. I love the characters, the storylines and the humour - and I'm rather partial to Ryo's dress sense.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with "FAKE" here's a quick overview. The series centres around Dee Laytner and Randy (Ryo) McLean, two detectives from NYPD's 27th precinct. Each volume contains at least two stories ("acts") and an "Aftertalk" from the mangaka. The stories focus on the cases Dee and Ryo deal with in the course of their work, and on Dee's wooing of his reluctant partner.
Make no mistake, this is a yaoi series. There is kissing in every volume and the action gradually heats up, to what extent I'm not saying. What I particularly like about this series is that Dee and Ryo are grown men who, on the whole, behave like grown men. There's no weeping, girly-type uke to be found here. And while I'm rather fond of pretty-boy ukes, it is refreshing to find a series that features two equal partners.
